Racket sports countdown – August

August was a very good month for Polish racket players. But not only Poles are on my August list…

Łukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo (tennis)
Łukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo won the tournament in Winston-Salem. In the final they beat Americans – Nicholas Monroe and Tennys Sandgren. It was the 13-th jointly won tournament by Kubot and Melo. At the same time, it was 25-th tournament won by Kubot in his career, and 33-rd won by Melo.

Magda Linette (tennis)
Continuation of Polish tennis successes… Magda Linette also won a tournament at American courts. As befits the Bronks – the courts were hard… It is the first Magda’s title in her career.

Hubert Hurkacz (tennis)
Hubert Hurkacz had to hit the podium, because recently he proved to be the best single on the Wake Forest University campus. Wroclawian is the first Polish champion of the main cycle competition since Wojciech Fibak (Chicago 1982).

Kento Momota (badminton)
Japanese badminton player won the world title for the second time. After last year’s triumph in Nanjing, Basel was happy this time for him. In the final he demolished his rival – Anders Antonsen from Denmark 21-9, 21-3.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu (badminton)
Absolutely deserved… Sindhu (just like Momota) won the world single title in Basel, but her gold medal was first in the history of India’s badminton. Except that, P.V. Sindhu deserves respect for perseverance. In 2017 and 2018 she won the silver of the world championship after defeats – in turn – with Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) and Carolina Marin (Spain). This time The Indian woman took revenge on Okuhara. She won with Japanese 21-7, 21-7.
